Palm Springs residents report fake police phone calls asking for money - Desert Sun

Residents have reported receiving fake phone calls from people claiming to work for the Palm Springs Police Department, who have demanded money for outstanding fines or fees, officials said Friday.

Police said the calls come from phone numbers that appear to originate from the department on the victim’s caller ID.

“The caller will then identify themselves as an actual Palm Springs Police Department employee and advise there is a warrant for their arrest or a court order needs to be served,” the statement said. “The caller will also provide the opportunity to pay the supposed fine/fees over the phone by using payment methods like prepaid credit cards and gift cards.”

Police confirmed they do not make calls demanding money.

Anybody who has received these calls is asked to call the police department at 760-327-1441.
