Recent research shows that overuse of cell phones by university students leads to a whole host of social and emotional problems.
BBC News reports a survey shows excessive phone use leads to lower grades, drinking problems and promiscuity.
The survey shows anxiety and depression also result from excessive phone use.
Researchers from the University of Chicago, Cambridge, and the University of Minnesota interviewed 3,400 students for the survey.
Dr. Rosemary Stein, a pediatrician with the Christian Medical and Dental Association, tells OneNewsNow problems begin at an early age because cell phones inhibit children from developing core relationships.
"So they don't have the relationships structure that children used to have,” she explains, “that these are fake things that these youngsters are relying on for their contentment."
Dr. Stein advises parents to limit cell phone use to one hour a day even if that seems difficult to enforce.
"If we don't build our people the right way with good relationships, with eye contact, with communication skills, with good cores,” she warns, “we're going to be a faulty society."
