Police warning about phone scams targeting elderly - MLive.com

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Police say they are seeing an increase in phone scams targeting the elderly.

Scammers are calling the older population and posing as a grandchild and asking for money, Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety said. They say they have been arrested or are about to be arrested and need money, police said.

Another version of the scam is for callers to say the person owes additional taxes to the government and they need to send a gift card to avoid arrest or having their tax refund withheld, police said.

Police are asking people to talk to their elderly family members about the scam calls and warn them against providing personal information over the phone. If there are questions about the legitimacy of a call, people can contact Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety at 517-788-4223.
