Is the public a little too close to their cellphones? Maybe. A new survey finds that nearly three-quarters of the public — 73% — now confess they use their phones “on the toilet.”
Another 76% consider themselves to be “addicted to their phones” while a sizable 88% say they feel uneasy leaving their phone at home. Yet the devices are a part of everyday life. It’s long been known that babies tap on smartphones and successfully scroll through screens before they can walk or talk, according to pediatric research released in 2015 by the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
The phones are there at all hours. Eight out of 10 Americans use their phone an an alarm clock while two-thirds reveal that they both sleep with their phones — and check their phones 160 times a day.
Yes, 160 times a day is the right number, according to the survey. Here are a few more findings:
• 64% of the respondents have texted someone who is in the same room as they are.
• 55% use or look at their phone while driving.
• 33% would give up their phones for a week if it mean they would “erase all their debt.”
• 33% spend more time on their phones than with their significant other.
• 17% spend more time on their phones than they do with their children.
“As long as people don’t look at their phones while driving and balance time between smartphone use and real-person interaction, there’s no reason why we can’t keep this beautiful thing going,” the poll analysis noted.
These poll results are from a Reviews.org survey of “Cell Phone Behavior” of 500 U.S adults conducted Jan. 23 and released Feb. 11.
